Trump's Attorney General lied under oath about his Russian contacts

America’s chief law-enforcement officer lied under oath to the Senate. That’s enough to require that Jeff Sessions resign – and it could even send him to jail.

1. Background: During Session’s confirmation hearing, after Senator Al Franken asked him what he would do if he learned of any evidence that anyone affiliated with the Trump campaign communicated with the Russian government during the 2016 campaign, Sessions said: “I have been called a surrogate at a time or two in that campaign and I did not have communications with the Russians.”

Sen. Patrick J. Leahy (D-Vt.) sent Sessions an additional written question: “Have you been in contact with anyone connected to any part of the Russian government about the 2016 election, either before or after election day?” Sessions’s one-word answer could not have been more categorical: “No.”

2. Reality: Sessions met twice with Russian ambassador Kislyak, considered by US intelligence to be one of Russia's top spies and spy-recruiters.

3. Sessions’s spin: His claim that his secret sit-downs with Kislyak were in his capacity as a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and not as a Trump campaign surrogate, is absurd. The Washington Post’s has contacted all 26 members of the Senate Armed Services Committee from 2016 to see whether any lawmakers besides Sessions met with Kislyak in 2016. Of the 20 lawmakers who responded, not one senator other than Sessions met with the Russian ambassador last year.

4. Fallout: Already prominent Republicans are urging that Sessions recuse himself from the FBI investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. Calls for his resignation are getting louder by the hour. Richard Painter, chief ethics officer under George W. Bush, says “Misleading the Senate in sworn testimony about one own contacts with the Russians is a good way to go to jail.”

The noose is tightening around Trump. Evidence is mounting that his campaign aides collaborated with Russian operatives in getting Trump elected. If so, this is treason.
