700 Historians Publish Damning Letter Urging The House To Impeach Trump On Wednesday

Topline: More than 700 historians have published a scathing open letter urging the House to impeach President Donald Trump, as lawmakers gear up for a historic vote to charge him with abuse of power and obstruction of congress on Wednesday.

Invoking the words of Alexander Hamilton, the letter said that Trump fits the description of what the founding father called an unscrupulous demagogue who is “unprincipled in private life, desperate in his fortune, bold in his temper, possessed of considerable talents …despotic in his ordinary demeanour.”

It adds that Trump’s actions “committed both before and during the House investigations ... manifest utter and deliberate scorn for the rule of law and ‘repeated injuries’ to constitutional democracy.”
The signatories warned that Trump’s continuing disregard constitutes a “clear and present danger to the Constitution.”

Historians who signed the letter, published on Medium, include Robert Dallek, a Pulitzer nominee who has chronicled presidents Nixon and Kennedy, and Brenda Wineapple, author of The Impeachers, which recounts the impeachment of Andrew Johnson.

Trump has repeatedly denied wrongdoing and has called the process a “hoax” and a “sham.”

Key background: On Monday, the House Judiciary Committee released a 658-page report detailing the facts underlying the two charges it has put to the president—abuse of power and obstruction of congress. The committee, headed up by chairman, Representative Jerry Nadler, arrived at the charges following months of public and private hearings seeking to establish whether Trump pressured Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate Joe Biden for Trump’s political gain.

Trump is accused of withholding $391 million in military aide unless Zelensky agreed to help him as well as trying to block top aides from testifying in the hearings.

  • 700 historians vs 64,000,000 Americans. The will of the few is of no matter.

Lets burn the constitution and ignore that 64 million americans voted for Trump lets burn it all because 700 individual says otherwise.

    Ok buddy ok.
  • Yes, exactly what I would expect from a Trumpeteer.....burn the constitution.

Well, he is certainly trying to do that.
  • This is what you leftists are doing. According to Nancy, Democrats have been working on impeachment since Trump took office in 2016. And according to Al Green he says if the Senate finds Trump innocent they will keep on trying to impeach Trump.

Democrats want to redo the 2016 election and disregard the will of the american people. 64 million of Americans who put Trump in office. The articles of impeachment don't hold up in a court.

The constitution give the executive rights and privileges and Democrats are impeaching Trump for following the constitution which give him executive privilege.

This is what leftists are doing. They want to rewrite the 2016 election and rewrite the constitution or in this case burn it.
  • By his own words and actions, Trump has been setting himself up for impeachment for three years now.

Today he faces the consequences of his unconstitutional behavior. Karma.
  • "unconstitutional behavior" like protecting the 2nd amendment and the right for babies to live.
  • Nope.

Unconstitutional behavior like abusing the power of the presidency by misusing taxpayer money to destroy a political rival.

Unconstitutional behavior like covering up his crime by defying legal subpoenas from congress for evidence and sworn testimony from eyewitnesses.

  • A President should not provide aid to a crooked foreign government. Infact, he should require thorough investigations of corruption regardless or not Democrats were involved. Are Democrats above the law? I think not.
  • @FactsMatter, no. Nancy said we have been working on impeaching Trump for 3 years.

First it was Collusion...They tried to impeach him it failed.

2nd it was for camping violation it failed.

    3rd for Stormy Daniels....it failed.

    4th Michael cohen....it also failed.

    5th Mueller report it failed.

You guys tried 5 times and 2 times in the house to impeached Trump. All failed. Except this.

Whats u constitutional behavior? What new crime is this?

Trump took his fight to the 3rd branch which is supposed to balance the 2 other branches but Democrats didn't want to go to court they wanted to side step the constitution which gives the executive branch the right called executive privilege. The problem is not with Trump but with the judicial branch. The judicial branch is looking into this and Democrats didn't wait for the 3rd branches respond they went ahead.

3 branches of government. 2 are arguing the first of the 2 ask the 3rd for his opinion and the 2nd says the 3rd opinion does not matter. The 2nd forget that this is how the constitution was set up.

3 branches 3 different responsibilities. Yet 1 of the branch which is controlled by Democrats think its power supersede the other 2.

Unconstitutional behavior is like collusion. Not in the f-in dictionary.
  • Democrats cover up the Bidens' pay-for-play, like many Micronesians cover up the crooks they put in office. SMH
  • Trumpsters spread malicious lies without any facts or evidence.
  • Time uncovers the truth, my friend. Let us wait and see.
  • Nixon was not impeached. He resigned due to democrats' mainstream propaganda. Senator Chuck Schumer wants more evidence. Apparently, the House Demokkkrats impeached the president without sufficient proof of a crime.
  • Nixon resigned after being caught lying and covering up the illegal break-in by his campaign workers into the democrat's headquarters in the Watergate building.

Nixon was forced by a court order to release the audio tape record of his crime.

Trump is refusing to release evidence that further confirms public statements, from his own mouth and from his key appointees, that he used taxpayer money to end military aid to Ukraine unless they helped him in his reelection.

Both Nixon and Trump are criminals who proved their guilt with their own words.

  • what evidence are those? Separation of Powers is a constitutional mandate. Trump need not send the democrats any of his closest advisers, just like Democrats need not send Trump any of their advisers. "Obstruction of Congress" is a farce, especially when ALL Republicans and some Democrats agree with the president. It's more accurate to call it "Obstruction of Socialists Democrats."
  • Read the U.S. Constitution. The legislative branch of government - Congress - has oversight responsibility over the executive branch - the White House.
