David Kabua has been elected as the new president of the Marshall Islands.

Mr Kabua, a veteran politician and former cabinet minister who is the second son of founding president Amata Kabua, won the vote by 20-12 with one abstention.

Mr Kabua has previously held the health and internal affairs ministerial portfolios.

Mr Kabua was seen as a presidential candidate who could bring rival candidates together as a leader acceptable to most factions, said RNZ Pacific correspondent Giff Johnson.

He described Mr Kabua as a likeable man, with a "low-key personality".

"He's been in Parliament for a couple of decades. Mostly he has been a backbencher, has been in Cabinet before, just somebody who is easy to get along with. [He] knows everybody and I guess you would describe him as a middle-of-the-road person, not likely to make a lot of waves."

Hilda Heine lost the position after a vote was carried out during the first session of Parliament today after the November general election.

Kenneth Kedi was re-elected as Speaker during the session.

A president in the Marshall Islands is usually inaugrated within a week of being elected and once they have sorted their Cabinet.

Voter turnout in the national election was the lowest in five elections.

Fewer than 40 percent of registered voters cast their ballots, continuing a downward trend since the high of 64 percent was set in 2003, according to information released by the Marshall Islands Electoral Administration on Friday.

  • The president-elect of the Marshall Islands has indicated he expects his upcoming four year term will be a challenging one.

David Kabua, a veteran politician and son of founding president Amata Kabua, was elected president on Monday by Parliament 20 votes to 12 with one abstention.

Mr Kabua has previously held the health and internal affairs ministerial portfolios.

Our correspondent Giff Johnson said Mr Kabua had wasted no time in indicating his priorities.

"Climate change was a big concern. Negotiations with the US on extending a funding arrangement beyond 2023 when the current one expires and he also mentioned the Runit Dome the Nuclear Waste Storage facility as things on his mind," he said.

It was a good experiment to say the least. Win or lose you tried.
  • Trump and David Kabua are cut from the same cloth. That's what you don't get. David is a conservative and reject the liberal political view regarding social and government policies.

What's important was the high chiefs admonished her administration during the vote in the nitijela. That was epic. Never did in the history of the nitijela did the House of chiefs admonished or scold a administration or a president but the high chiefs did infront of the marshallese nation during the nitijela Presidential election. That high chief admonished her and cabinet for dividing the nation and called her out for breaking the constitution and going against the "Jepelpel in keju kaan" proverb. Instead of uniting the RMI nation she divided it and that was awesome coming from the Chiefs who were unanimously against her liberal government.
  • David Kabua says that global warming caused by burning fossil fuels is REAL and a threat to his country's existence.

Donald Trump says that global warming is FAKE NEWS and a HOAX.

No way are these two men "cut from the same cloth." Anyone who can read can see that.
  • that reaper is the real fake news.
  • They live in two different countries with different national interests.
  • They are both conservative leaning. Both disagree with same sex marriage. D Kabua admires Trump, he consider Trump a strong leader. D. Kabua is of the opinion that global warming is nothing new. He is also of the opinion that America should take of of its people first. Did you see video of his election? When he was nominated the words like " Putting Marshallese first" "Taking care of our own" " Being self reliant" "A successful businessman" were used to describe why he should be President and not Hilda. All those things are what Trump stands for.

D.Kabua agrees with Trump on that China and India are contributing more to global warming than The US.

  • hey reaper , in case you haven't notice, there is a link there that tells it all, no need top be an ignorant about this we all can read right?..
  • Fake news FM at it again.
  • Where in the article does it says David Kabua refute that Global warming is a hoax? All read was its a concern.
  • Fake news. Trying to divide Trump a potential ally. Democrats love to divide people.
  • Facts are facts, whether you like them or not.

David Kabua says that global warming caused by burning fossil fuels is REAL and a threat to his country's existence.

Donald Trump says that global warming is FAKE NEWS and a HOAX.

I personally know David Kabua. He is polite, humble, and reasonable....completely the opposite of the foul-mouthed, egotistic, impulsive Donald Trump.
  • The RMI President never said that global warming is caused by fossil fuel. He just said "global warming is a concern. "

If you know David Kabua personally then i know Soleimani personally too. Lol

If you know if Personally @FactsMatter, can you tell us what clan or jowi he is part of? Anyone who know him personally know what clan or tribe he is part of. If you also know him personally he would have told you the name of the Chief who brought them from Kabinmeto/Witho atoll to rakinmeto/Jalooj atoll. This is his favorite past time story that he like to tell those whom know him well. So as u claim u know him personally give the name of his clan and the name of the chief of brought them from wotho to jalooj. All his personal friends know this story.

  • Putting words into peoples mouth is not facts its called fake news.
  • Actually environment protection should not be matter of debateimage
  • True Bull01 True. But it looks like FM is making stuff up. I too looked into that article and what he says the RMI President say seems like it was never said.

  • Read the article again:

"Our correspondent Giff Johnson said Mr Kabua had wasted no time in indicating his priorities.

"Climate change was a big concern."
  • You said D.Kabua said Climate is not a hoax. But as i quote the link you posted it said " Climate change is a concern". Kind of different than what you are implying.

By the way your man Giff Johnson played a role in influencing Hilda to signed the law her administration passed to take away votes and rights of Marshallese abroad. And he tried to influence the General election 2 months ago in the RMI. Giff tried his best to get Jack Neithendal elected.

And at least correct your statement. D. Kabua never said what you said.

But then again you are good a spread fake news.
