The US Goverment and Various State Governments Pay +/- $20 Billion Yearly to Oil and Coal Companies

A study of federal and and state subsidies to major for profit oil and coal companies -- yes, the ones that are most responsible for polluting our air and water, and creating a more and more unlivable climate -- showed that approximately $20 billion per year in subsidies are paid to oil and coal companies.

These subsidies -- about $14 billion of US tax dollars and the rest from various state tax revenues -- go to companies like Exxon-Mobil, BP, Chevron, etc. Exxon-Mobil and Chevron make over $30 billion in profits per year. This may be why we can't afford to pay for food stamps, but food stamps are only for the poor anyway. As Richard Nixon famously said in a men's room in Las Vegas, "Fuck the poor." Credit to Hunter Thompson, rest his soul.

  • Your news article is published in 2018 and cited sources in 2017. The USA is fuel independent now. That's all we need to know. I need not go into tax shifting and how such subsidies ultimately help employees , customers and suppliers. As for subsidizing corporations that represent our interests in economic wars, our nation's security also depend on a strong economy.....not on a pathetic military and economy focused on constituents' and illegal immigrants' food stamps.
