Where is Captain America?

Cuba and China ( as Reaper likes to call em ' Socialist countries) are now at the forefront of the fight against the Coronavirus!

Their joint vaccine are now being used in many countries like Italy, Panama, South Korea, Germany.....

UK Sectretary of State Dominic Raab Thanks Cuba for Coronavirus Assistance

By Bruce Cumings

Dominic Raab, the UK Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, thanked the Cuban Government today in parliament for their assistance with the stricken British cruise ship the MS Braemar which had passengers with possible coronavirus infections.

He made the ministerial statement to MPs in parliament today

“I spoke to the Cuban Foreign Minister twice over the weekend and we are very grateful to the Cuban government for swiftly enabling this operation and for their close cooperation to make sure it could be successful.”

Cuba will allow the British ship MS Braemar to dock in Havana facilitating the mainly British passengers to disembark and fly home. This is after a number of other countries, including the Bahamas and Barbados, refused permission to dock because a number of passengers were infected with coronavirus.

The Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs said of its decision:

“These are times of solidarity, of understanding health as a human right, of reinforcing international cooperation to face our common challenges, values that are inherent in the humanistic practice of the Revolution and of our people.”

This gesture once again illustrates Cuba’s internationalist outlook of solidarity and friendship. At the same time it once again highlights the stark contrast between Cuba and the disgraceful actions of the United States. At a time when the world community must pull together to share resources and knowledge in the fight against coronavirus the US continues to implement its disastrous 60 year old blockade of the island.

The blockade stops companies and countries from across the globe from trading with Cuba and punishes those that do so with huge multi million dollar fines

The blockade seriously impacts across Cuba affecting the daily lives of the people. The effects are most keenly felt across the hospitals and clinics where much needed medicines and equipment are in short supply.

Despite the US blockade Cuba prioritises its health service which has managed to find ways to deliver excellent results mainly through an extensive primary care programme. Cuba has also developed its own large bio pharmaceutical industry to produce many of the medicines that it is not able to buy abroad.

It has developed and produces a number of medicines including the antiviral drug Interferon Alpha 2B, that could save thousands of lives in the COVID-19 pandemic

. The medicine has been produced in China in a Cuban-Chinese joint venture, and so far, has managed to effectively treat more than 1,500 patients from the coronavirus there. Interferon is one of 30 drugs chosen by the Chinese National Health Commission to combat the respiratory disease and is now being used by many other countries including South Korea, Panama, Italy and Germany. It is also being requested by many other countries for use in their response to the current pandemic.

Cuba has also just sent a brigade of medical professionals to Italy, after requests from the Italian government, to assist in the fight against coronavirus. This is the latest in a long history of international medical solidarity including working with the World Health Organisation (WHO) in Western Africa in the fight against the Ebola epidemic.

The UK has no sanctions in place against Cuba yet UK companies and individuals are blocked from trading with the island due to the extraterritorial sanctions imposed by the United States. While the UK Government votes against the blockade at the United Nations each year, the British government needs to do much more in opposing the US policy and protecting British companies trading with Cuba.

Rob Miller, CSC Director said

“Cuba is now at the forefront of the international battle against coronavirus and the wonderful humanitarian response to the plight of the passengers of the MS Braemar once again illustrates Cuba’s policies of internationalism and solidarity. At the same time it shines a light on the disastrous United States policy of aggression and blockade that hinders the ability of Cuban health professionals to assist in the worldwide battle against coronavirus.

“Cuba has experience, skills, medical personnel, and medicines that could assist in the world wide battle against coronavirus. It is imperative that the demand for an end to the US Blockade is raised at this time.”

  • AC, what is the name of the "vaccine" that you tout as being made by Cuba and China that is used to heal the virus?

If such an anti-viral treatment is now available, it must have been made a long time ago. Somebody had created the COVID-19 virus; then, used its single strand RNA to create and propagate viroid structure as basis for a drug against it.

But how can that happen when the COVID-19 just became known a couple of months ago--as the Chinese government claim? Or, does Cuba and China know of real origin or how the COVID-19 virus was created in the lab? It seems you have a good connection to these theories, so please explain for us to understand.
  • COVID-19 emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan in late December 2019, and by January 2020 it had hit Hubei province like a tidal wave, swirling over China and rippling out overseas.

The Chinese state rolled into action to combat its spread and care for those infected. Amongst the 30 medicines chosen by the Chinese National Health Commission to fight the virus was a Cuban anti-viral drug called Interferon Alfa-2B, which has been produced in China by the Cuban-Chinese joint venture ChangHeber since 2003.

    Interferon Alfa-2B and Cuban biotechnology
Cuban Interferon Alfa-2B has proven effective for viruses with characteristics similar to those of COVID-19. Cuban biotech specialist Dr Luis Herrera Martínez explains that “its use prevents aggravation and complications in patients, reaching that stage that can ultimately result in death.”

Cuba first developed and used interferons to arrest a deadly outbreak of the dengue virus in 1981, and that experience catalysed the development of the island’s now world-leading biotech industry.

The world’s first biotechnology enterprise, Genetech, was founded in San Francisco in 1976, followed by AMGen in Los Angeles in 1980. One year later, the Biological Front, a professional interdisciplinary forum, was set up to develop the industry in Cuba.

While most developing countries had little access to new technologies (recombinant DNA, human gene therapy, biosafety), Cuban biotechnology expanded and took on an increasingly strategic role in both the public-health sector and the national economic development plan. And this despite the US blockade, which obstructed access to technologies, equipment, materials, finance, and even knowledge exchange. Driven by public-health demand, it has been characterised by its fast track from research and innovation to trials and application, as the story of Cuban interferon shows.
  • AC, thanks for providing the links and the report about the Cuba/Chinese efforts in developing medicine for the virus. However, it looks like it's not a medicine or vaccine that was developed quickly by the Cubans/Chinese against the COVID-19 which has specific RNA structure. It was developed for other purpose; and now they will try to see if it can work for COVID-19. This is similar to the trials that is being conducted in the US for existing drugs such as those that are anti-malarial, etc.

I think if what is being claimed in this report is correct as far as the efficacy of the Cuba/Chinese anti-viral medicine, it would have been reported by the World Health Organization (WHO). As you know the head of WHO is a friend of the Chinese; and he has been speaking well of how the Chinese now don't report any new infection. I would think that the head of WHO will be telling the world about the medicine/vaccine that you are talking about here.

The efforts to try out some existing medicine is a good one because the ones that have been approved by the US are known as far as their cause of death. So they know the dosage to work with. But whether or not, such medicine as anti-malarial medicine will work is now being tested on real people. Hopefully, they are doing several different tests on different type of medicines.

And if you are right about the Cuban medicine, I am sure somebody will have already brought it to the attention of the Germans, Italians, French, etc., to try out in their own populations under some strict scientific study. Good luck to all.
  • Marc, thank you for the info and response. Let's not forget and I read in another article that one main reason the media or even many countries do not acknowledge this Cuban and Chinese effort in combating this Coronavirus is because of the US embargo or blockade of Cuba and the threat of sanctions to any nation that trade with Cuba. Interestingly, both nations are being sanctioned by the US, just like many other countries.

Even the UN is powerless when it comes to US sanctioning another country.

I am perplexed as to why US did not or doesnt take the initiative to tackle or address this pandemic but chose to keep bombing Iraq even sanctions another Coronavirus-hit country, Iran more which will result in more deaths.

That's what I dont understand. While Cuba and China are trying to help Italy, Iran, Spain, Germany, South Korea, US is busy bombing Iraq and hitting Iran with more sanctions.

A compassionte World leader no more I surmise but I could be wrong.
  • AC, you're making a lot of good points and expressing good concerns. From what I've read from different sources, here are my thoughts:

Regarding the bombing in Iraq, I read that just a couple of days ago the Iran's terrorists based inside Iraq, shot a couple--actually many--missiles to a base in Iraq which killed a couple of American military personnel. So I think it's the US military response to that attack. I think the US is sending a message to the terrorist that even though the US might be busy with the virus, it will retaliate to any attack on Americans.

As for the sanctions, I believe the US is just taking the lead to impose sanctions that have been approved by the UN. There might be some US-specific sanctions but I am not sure.

As for the drug that you said was developed by Cuba and China to cure the COVID-19, it might be true that there is such a drug. However, I believe it has not been tested specifically for this specific corona virus. As you know, there are all kinds of virus including the virus for the flu that we encounter everyday.

I think the US government and the US scientists/doctors and pharmaceutical companies are trying out different medicines that are already available--to see if they can combine with antibiotics in order to slow/kill the COVID-19 virus and at the same time, the antibiotics will also kill any bacteria that affects lungs, etc., as in some cases of pneumonia.

The reason why the US Government and Pharmaceutical companies are being careful in testing and re-testing such existing drugs, such as the anti-malarial drugs, is because medicine--any medicine--can kill somebody if the dosage taken is too high. Even Tylenol can kill if you take too many pills at one time.

The medicine that they are trying out are the ones that were already approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) for human use--at specific dosages.

The anti-malarial drug that they are interested in testing was discovered in 1933 and was brought to the market/consumers by 1944--if my reading is right.

So the pharmaceutical companies can go over the records of the trials for that drug: from monkey, dogs, and low dosages to people. They want to know, not only the efficacy test results but also the toxicity information. At what dosage does the drug actually kill a human being.

The US Government does not want to okay a drug until it is proven safe enough for human use.

So, Cuba and China might already have some drugs to offer. But I think the US will only accept/recommend drugs that have been proven 100% safe to people.
  • Hi my friend Marc,

Regarding the bombing of Iraqi sites, regarless of who started it, I still think and believe US should get out of Iraq & fight the real war, Coronavirus, which I believe will kill thousands of Americans if US do not prioritize or address this pandemic outbreak.

Can you magine CDC officials and University experts are saying or predicting instead of working on a vaccine fast?

Not so good, makes me wanna go back home....

Officials at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and epidemic experts from universities around the world conferred last month about what might happen if the new coronavirus gained a foothold in the United States.
    How many people might die?
How many would be infected and need hospitalization?

Between 160 million and 214 million people in the United States could be infected over the course of the epidemic, according to a projection that encompasses the range of the four scenarios.

That could last months or even over a year, with infections concentrated in shorter periods, staggered across time in different communities, experts said.

As many as 200,000 to 1.7 million people could die.

See thethe link below....New York Times.....

I just can't understand....China has over a billion people and was able to combat the Coronavirus & able to put it under control.

US, on the other hand, is already predicting how many US citizens will get infected & die instead of tackling or addressing the issue fast...

By the way, heres an interesting article on Cuba....

  • While the first clinical test for a Coronavirus vaccine started in the United States today, Cuba may have already developed a successful medicine able to cure COVID-19. The western world has been slow to recognize the potential that this small Caribbean nation is contributing to the biggest challenge the world has faced in a very long time.

It’s almost a miracle Cuba only has four active but not serious infections of Coronavirus. No one died in Cuba from a COVID-19 infection yet. The sick in Cuba include three Italian tourists and one Cuban national with dozens of others quarantined out of precaution with suspected but unconfirmed cases under quarantine.

The communist Caribbean country was one of the last in the Americas and the Caribbean to report the presence of the infection in its territory.
