COVID Vaccination Mandatory for FSM adults

JULY 30 2021

The Federated States of Micronesia has made COVID-19 vaccination compulsory for everyone over 18.

The small South Pacific island nation of The Federated States of Micronesia has mandated that its adult population be inoculated against COVID-19 in an effort to continue to prevent the pandemic reaching its shores.

The Federated States of Micronesia, with a population just over 113,000 and covering more than 600 islands, has not recorded any locally-acquired COVID-19 cases after it shut its international borders to prevent the spread of the virus.

In a statement issued late on Thursday, the Pacific island nation said everyone over 18 will have to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.

"The Federated States of Micronesia still has so much work to do to conquer the pandemic," said the country's President David Panuelo said.

Other Pacific island countries also shut their borders but some have now experienced an outbreak of COVID-19.

In Fiji, which was COVID-19 free until earlier this year, the country has recorded more than 6000 cases this week that is overwhelming hospitals.

Such is the strain, Fiji can no longer test everyone with symptoms. Only those deemed at greatest risk is tested.

  • The article did not tell the entire story. My understanding is that the mandatory shots are only for the National Government employees. No shot, no pay. What about the rest of the adult population? How are we going to require that they take the shots? At the same time, the FSM Congress and the President are relaxing some of the restrictions from 7 days quarantine to 72 hours. This is a dangerous move on the part of the politicians. They should listen to the medical expertise and stop playing with people's life.
  • I will not consent with this mandate and my children period!!! There were many people died from other form of illnesses cause by food imported to our islands and our so called government couldn't do anything bout it, but why so desperate to force people to do this? Because we the government, the people are conditioned to remain silent remain fearful, remain ignorant to such control which is not from our own leaders but others that have wealth over us.

The Federated States of Micronesia has become one of the first nations to adopt mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations.

Everyone in the western Pacific country over the age of 18 will be required to be vaccinated.

President David Panuelo says it's a necessary step to achieve heard immunity.

"We have 58-thousand of our population who are eligible and these are individuals that are subject to getting that vaccine, and congress has just made that compulsory," he said.

"We are so fortunate that we are still one of COVID-19 free countries in the world."

Mr Panuelo told Pacific Beat the government hopes to have more than 70 per cent of population vaccinated by Christmas, but some people will not be required to get the jab.

"People who have vulnerable health conditions, pregnant women and children under 18... are not subject to the mandatory vaccinations."

"We see that we are going to reach our 70 per cent target and we should even to go beyond that."

"My hope is that we reach heard immunity by Christmas, so we can move from COVID-19 free to COVID-19 protected," he said.

The FSM President has acknowledged that some people remain vaccine hesitant but that health officials are working to convince them of the benefits.

"Like in every country we have people who are hesitant."

"Those are the issues we are going to deal with... but we are [campaigning] fairly aggressively so that we can share the importance and benefits of getting vaccinated," he said.

"Rather than laying back in our hammock thinking we are okay ... [we are] getting out and explaining the benefits of getting vaccinated so we can be safe from this deadly virus."

  • " so we can move from covid19 free to covid19 protected country". That sounds like a winning strategy in my opinion. I think the president is taking the issue very seriously and not using it for political advancement like other neighboring state.
  • In the United States It appears asymptomatic infection is widespread and transmissible within the vaccinated community.
It is possible the vaccinated community is now the primary vector.
  • The greatest risk of transmission is among UNVACCINATED people who are much more likely to contract, and therefore transmit the virus.
  • everyone can contract and transmit the virus even the fully vaccinated one, it is just that the vaccine saves lives, if the world's total population is completely vaccinated, the virus loses, there will be no more death and lives comes back to normal.
  • Well said, visafree. Who needs vaccines? Just about everyone in the world.
